The History of Harry C. Withers & Withers Elementary
Harry C. Withers Elementary School was named after distinguished North Texas journalist and community leader, Harry Clay Withers. Born in 1880 in Denton, Texas, Withers attended Denton public school and graduated from Haskell Institute (a Presbyterian junior college) in Durant, Oklahoma. In 1947, Southwestern University at Georgetown conferred an honorary Doctorate of Literature.
Withers began his journalism career in 1901 as a reporter for the Denton Record chronicle. After a brief stint at the Houston Post, Withers landed at the Dallas morning News to work as a “cub” reporter covering first and “obits”. From these humble beginnings, Withers launched an impressive 55-year career at the Dallas Morning News, working in virtually every department of the daily paper. He quickly progressed from sports reporter and city editor to upper management ranks, retiring as executive editor on New Year’s Day 1959. He died several months later of a heart attack.
Withers Elementary is located on a 9-acre combination park and school site originally purchased in 1954 for about $33,000. In 1958, 176 people filed a petition with the Dallas School Board requesting that an elementary road be built. Withers was the 155th school for DISD.
In 1980, due to a declining student population, the school board began to consider closing some elementary schools, including Withers. The parents and community rallied together and were able to keep the school open. Unfortunately, in 1982, still under protest, Harry C. Withers was closed. Almost a decade later, in 1990, the school was finally re-opened with overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the surrounding community.
